Tonight she’d kept stressing the word friend, hoping to convince him when, actually, she was the one who needed the reminder. Cody made her want things she knew better than to want, made her act in ways she shouldn’t. What in the world had gotten into her? She’d behaved badly in the restaurant with Brian, but she couldn’t seem to work up much remorse. The show of temper had made her feel liberated, as if she’d just taken a vacation from herself.

The behavior was more suited to something Maggie would have done.

Needing to unwind, Hallie switched on the stereo. Music flowed from the compact disk, energizing and relaxing all at the same time. As the beat reverberated through her, she inched the volume up a notch, swaying to the sensual beat, feeling a freedom she usually didn’t allow herself...feeling a little bit naughty.

Was this how Maggie felt when posing for a camera? Beautiful...reckless...naughty? Caught up in the emotion of the moment, she pictured herself as her cousin, imagined herself psyching herself up for the camera, playing to that lens, releasing her inhibitions, feeling beautiful, desirable, confident. For a brief few instants she actually became someone else, and it was Cody’s image she saw at the other end of the imaginary camera she played to, Cody’s jarring blue eyes watching her, mesmerizing her.

In her imagination, she teased him, deliberately, luring him into her sensuality, spinning a spell so strong he was powerless to resist.

Her movements became more pronounced as his image filled her mind, her soul. Alone, with no one to witness the breech in her strict personal code, Hallie let herself dream, imagined that she was free to let loose the bad-girl streak she normally suppressed. Cody had done that to her; he’d slipped past her defenses, tapped into a yearning she knew she had no business entertaining.

But fantasies were safe. No one would ever know.
